SOUND MACHINES
featuring Mauricio Kagel's "Zwei Mann Orchester"
presented with Bowerbird
April 19, 2018
May 3 to May 31, 2018
Opening Reception: Thursday, May 3, 5-7pm with Performance at 7pm
The Pearlstein Gallery and Bowerbird are pleased to present SOUND MACHINES, an exhibition that explores the interplay between sound and object, performance and sculpture, and our changing experience of sound in an age of digital reproduction. The centerpiece of the project will be an performer-activated, large-scale kinetic sound sculpture, Zwei Mann Orchester (Two Man Orchestra), conceived by late German-Argentine composer, artist, and filmmaker Mauricio Kagel (1931-2008). Originally created in 1973 and never before seen in the US, Zwei Mann Orchester utilizes orchestral instruments, household items, and found objects connected through a network of levers and strings. Each version of Zwei Mann Orchester is unique - the Philadelphia edition will be designed and created by musicians Andy Thierauf and Ashley Tini, instrument builder Neil Feather, sculptor Scott Kip, and curator Dustin Hurt.
